Brazilian footwear industry association Abicalçados has said it believes the shoe sector there has shed 26,500 jobs in the past month.

Almost 8,000 jobs were lost in the footwear industry in São Paulo, more than 7,500 jobs in Rio Grande do Sul, 5,000 in Minas Gerais and 2,500 in Santa Catarina.

Executive president, Haroldo Ferreira, said footwear manufacturers had suffered a sharp fall in or-ders between the end of March and the end of April. Shops had to close because of the covid-19 epidemic, he explained, which meant customers placed no new orders.

In addition to that, he said that companies had experienced cancellations and difficulty in receiving payments for orders already delivered.
