Steady year for South African shoe production

Data from the Southern African Footwear and Leather Industries Association (SAFLIA) show that manufacturers in South Africa produced just over 56.9 million pairs of shoes in 2019, flat with the figure for 2018.

The number of people employed by shoe manufacturers in 2019 was 10,622, down by 2.7% compared to the year before.

Exports of shoes from South Africa fell by 9.5% to reach 3.5 million pairs. At the same time, footwear imports also fell, by 5.8% year on year to reach 199 million pairs.
