Australian brand of slow-fashion leather shoes going global

BATU, an Australian-based luxury footwear brand, is launching globally this week, following a soft launch of selling the direct-to-consumer leather shoes to an Australian audience.

Founder Bree Munro recently spoke to Forbes about establishing a business that sidesteps the fast-fashion approach for limited edition shoes. The shoes are made in Indonesia with textured leather sourced from Java, produced in relatively small batches that aren’t beholden to typical seasonal collections. Pre-orders and small productions help ensure that unsold inventory is minimal.

Ms Munro said she values brand transparency and gets her hides only from ethical sources for which hides are a byproduct of local meat industries. She said BATU uses as much of a given hide as possible, embracing what might be otherwise considered flaws and imperfections.
