Some LWG members suggest social responsibility should be included
The multi-stakeholder Leather Working Group (LWG) said members were concerned about alternative materials and the “vegan lifestyle” while others cited the industry’s reputation as a worry.
A total of 245 - including 125 leather manufacturers - responded to its survey, representing 34% of members and the highest percentage to complete the annual survey, which it uses to steer direction.
Members stated that the biggest area of focus should be “stricter environmental targets” with “social responsibility” coming second.
LWG described this response as “surprising” as social responsibility is an area “that is not covered in the LWG Protocol in any significant detail”.
It said: “This will be discussed with the executive committee and other steering groups.”
Most respondents (98%) see collaboration with other groups such as ZDHC and Textile Exchange as important or very important.
