CEC in call for production re-shoring
The European Footwear Confederation (CEC) and leather industry body COTANCE have issued a joint statement with the European Apparel and Textile Confederation and trade union industriAll Europe about the economic impact of covid-19.
They called on consumer product manufacturers to “re-shore production”, arguing that making at least some of their products in Europe again will help them make their supply chains more responsible and environmentally friendly.
“Offshoring a large amount of the industrial production to non-EU countries has made the EU vulnerable,” the statement said. “De-industrialisation has weakened the EU’s industrial sovereignty and resulted in many job losses. Certain countries where production has been relocated have neither the same social and environmental standards nor [the same] ambitions as the EU is committed to.”
It said re-shoring production would help companies work towards “a green re-industrialisation”.
