Sequins and “liquid glitter” leather are among the effects footwear designer Nicholas Kirkwood has embraced in his autumn-winter 2019-2020 collection.

The Scottish designer has said he took inspiration for this collection from Asian cinema, and in particular from two films by Hong Kong-based director Wong Kar-Wai: 2046 and Fallen Angels. These films etched in his mind an image of dark motel rooms, illuminated by fluorescent neon lights.

Glitter and sequins help him achieve the dawn and dusk hues he wanted and reflect what he has referred to as “the changing states of the city”.
