The upcoming edition of the Micam footwear exhibition in Milan (September 15-18) will host 76 brands from Brazil, a record number of participating companies from the South American country. Micam is celebrating its fiftieth birthday this year.

Assistance from national footwear industry body Abicalçados and from export promotions agency Apex-Brasil, who, together, run an international programme called Brazilian Footwear, has helped make this record participation possible.

Abicalçados analyst Paola Pontin said in the build-up to the Milan event that there are encouraging signs for Brazilian shoe exports. She pointed to the comparatively high value of the US dollar, the trade tensions between the US and China and the successful conclusion of negotiations for a free trade agreement between the European Union and South American trading bloc Mercosur.

In the first eight months of 2019, Brazilian footwear manufacturers exported more than 75 million pairs of shoes and boots, earning revenues of $644 million. These figure represent an increase of 8.2% volume and of 2.5% in value compared to the same months in 2018.
