Global growth drives lasting changes for Crockett & Jones
Northampton-based footwear manufacturer Crockett & Jones has freshened up its collection of lasts, redeveloping two of its favourites to create two new lasts.

“A last is the beating heart of a shoe,” the company said on announcing the development, “a fundamental requirement of shoemaking and a shoemaker’s signature.”

It said it has learned from more than a century of making lasts and shoes, but explained that growth in key markets around the globe means its collection of lasts needs to be ever-more diverse.

Based on its own knowledge and on feedback from wholesale customers and end consumers, it has created the two new lasts, lasts 379 and 140, by giving what it has called “a makeover” to some of the longest-serving lasts already in the collection, lasts 236, 363 and 330.

Last 379 will be used for shoes in the main Crockett & Jones collection in shoes such as formal business Oxfords. It has what the company describes as “classical round toe”, which it takes from the 236 last.

In contrast, last 140 will enter service to make shoes for the company’s hand grade collection, taking this number in celebration of the firm’s 140th anniversary. It is a blend of the fore-part of last 330 with the back-part coming from the 363.
