France destruction ban could hit luxury companies hard

The ban would apply to non-food goods, including clothing, electrical items and cosmetics. Among the sectors to be hit by this legislation would be the luxury industry, which as well as being one of France’s most important is also often accused of destroying stock in order to protect prices. However, special arrangements may be made for luxury companies.
“It is a waste that shocks, that is shocking to common sense. It’s a scandal,” Mr Philippe said when launching this proposal.
According to the prime minister’s office, more than €650 million worth of new consumer products are thrown away or destroyed every year in France.
These new measures would make it compulsory for products to be handed in to be re-used or recycled. The bill is expected to be discussed by the French cabinet in July. If approved, it would come into law sometime between 2021-23.
