Only shoes deliver positive news for Pakistan leather sector

Pakistan’s leather-sector exports continue to fall in value. Official figures for the first nine months of the current financial year, July 2018-March 2019, show total export revenues of almost $630 million, which is a decline of 11.7% compared to the same period in the previous financial year.

For finished leather, the figures make even more difficult reading. Volumes shipped to customers outside Pakistan declined by almost 20% to reach 15.6 million square-feet. In terms of value, finished leather exports brought in $188 million, a decline of 21.8%.

Leathergoods brought in export revenues of just over $350 million over the nine-month period, a fall of 8.4% year on year.

Once again, only leather footwear exports delivered some positive news for Pakistan’s leather sector. Shoe producers exported more than 8.6 million pairs of leather shoes in the first three quarters of the current financial year, bringing in revenues of $90 million. These figures represent an increase of 18.8% in volume and of 11.4% in value.
