A group of producers of leather shoes and finished leathergoods from the Colombian department of Antioquia spent a day in mid-April visiting the new tannery that leather manufacturer Cueros Vélez opened in the town of Amagá in 2017.

Nine finished product manufacturers made the trip to see at first hand the processes involved in producing the material they work with.

Cueros Vélez said on opening the tannery two years ago that the facility would have the capacity to process around 30,000 hides per month and would allow it to create 250 new jobs in and around Amagá.

After investing around $20 million in the project, Cueros Vélez said it would use between 30% and 35% less water in the new tannery and save around 30% in energy consumption.
