Serious decline in Paraguay’s shoe consumption

Speaking to local media, Cicpar president Elder Otazo said local shoe manufacturers have reported a significant decrease in sales in the domestic market.
He blamed a law introduced by the government in recent years to regulate the use of credit cards in the country, explaining that Paraguayan consumers often depend on this method of payment when purchasing more expensive shoes. He said recent increases in interest rates had made it so that footwear is no longer seen as a high-priority purchase.
Mr Otazo also expressed concerns on behalf of the Paraguayan footwear industry about the wave of shoe imports coming in from China, calling for higher tariffs and stronger restrictions on these products.
