Shoes are the good news for Bangladesh

09/01/2019
Leather footwear manufacturers in Bangladesh brought in export revenues of $325 million in the first six months of the current financial year, July-December 2018. This represents growth of 5.9%.

These figures also mean that leather footwear contributed more than 60% of total leather-sector export revenues over the six-month period.

However, if shoes are a success story, the results of other parts of the Bangladesh leather sector have been disappointing. Exports of finished leather brought in just over $90 million, while shipments of leathergoods earned export revenues of $116 million. These figures represent declines of 7.1% and 46% respectively.

In total, the leather sector’s export revenues for the first half of the financial year reached $532.3 million, which is down by 14% on the corresponding figure for the previous financial year.

The government has set the leather industry a target of exporting product worth more than $1.1 billion for this financial year, an increase of 3.5% compared to the previous financial year.
