BASF halts production of core component for PU at Ludwigshafen

28/11/2018
Chemical manufacturer BASF has announced that it is having to halt production of TDI (toluene diisocyanate), a core component for polyurethanes, at its plant in Ludwigshafen.

“The water level of river Rhine is currently at an all-time low,” the company said, “impacting transport by ship. Despite maximum shift to alternative means of transport (pipeline, trucks and rail), not all raw materials can be supplied to BASF’s Ludwigshafen site. Therefore, BASF will have to stop the TDI production in Ludwigshafen.”

It said it will only be able to restart production when water levels on the Rhine improve. It said it is maintaining close contact with its customers about this.
