Northampton opens first new shoe factory in decades
London-based footwear firm Foster and Son has become the first company in decades to open a new shoe factory in the UK. It chose October 25, the feast of industry patron saint, St Crispin, to open its new factory, located in Northampton.

Eight people have started work immediately in the newly opened factory but the company expects this to increase the workforce there to 20 in the next 12 months.

Foster and Son’s bespoke business will remain in London, where craftsmen and women work above the shop in St James’s to complete orders for customers all around the world under two brand names, Foster and Son and Henry Maxwell.

However, the company has long offered a ready-to-wear range too and its these ready-to-wear shoes that the factory in Northampton will produce. Until now, a Northampton-based manufacturing partner made these shoes.

At the opening of the factory, company chairman, Richard Edgecliffe-Johnson, said: “Northampton is a great craft centre and, because English shoes are different from those made elsewhere, Northampton was the obvious place for us to come to for high-quality, English-made shoes. This is where all the craft skills are.”
