Australia offers opportunities for Spanish shoe companies

Australia’s lack of domestic footwear manufacturing and its resulting dependency on imported shoes makes it an interesting target market for Spanish companies, according to a recent report from export promotions agency ICEX.

Australia imports footwear from a number of Asian countries, as well as from Europe, ICEX has said, with a number of Spanish brands already present there through relationships with agents specialising in footwear from Europe.

“The companies that have had the most success in recent years are those that have increased their spending on marketing in order to gain recognition in the country,” ICEX has explained.

The report warned, however, that the Australian market is becoming increasingly complicated because footwear distribution is concentrated to a small number of chains. It added that research had shown that Australian importers “do not want new brands” and that they prefer to bring in premium footwear that is in some way different to the products being imported by their competitors.
