Steve Madden rejects YSL accusations

US footwear company Steve Madden has bit back at Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) after the French fashion house accused it of infringing on the design patents of two of its shoes.

The case centres around two Steve Madden designs: the Kananda shoe and the Sicily sandal. YSL alleges these products infringe on the design patent it holds on its Tribute sandals, as well as alleged trade dress rights to its shoes.

The Kananda model is no longer on sale, but the Sicily sandal is still available. YSL says it has sent cease and desist letters to a number of Steve Madden’s vendors.

In a complaint filed at a US District Court, Steve Madden accused YSL of attempting “to stifle legitimate competition”. It also rejected the suggestion that consumers would confuse one style for another.
