The president of the local footwear industry body in the Mexican state of Jalisco (CICEJ), José Isabel Arias Frías, has said Mexico’s annual footwear consumption now stands at around 300 million pairs.

He also indicated that the nation’s footwear companies are responsible for the manufacturing of 250 million pairs of shoes per year. To make up for this shortfall, and for the fact that just over 27 million pairs of shoes made domestically are exported, Mexico imports around 80 million pairs per year, he added.

Referring specifically to the state of Jalisco, Mr Arias Frías said footwear companies there make 75 million pairs per year, which wold make it the second most important shoe-manufacturing state in terms of volume. He also said that this sector employs 20,000 people in the state directly and a further 30,000 indirectly.
