Spanish footwear technology institute Inescop has embarked on a new programme of research to find what it has called safer and more sustainable materials for use in children’s shoes.

It said on announcing the development that its work will take into account the particular needs of children’s shoes, including facilitating the healthy growth of young feet and guarding against toxicity.

A regional body, the Valencian Institute for Business Competitiveness (IVACE), with co-funding from the European Union, is providing €2 million in financial support for the project.

Materials Inescop hopes to develop include leathers that biodegrade more easily and more sustainable glues for cementing components together.
