Tough times for Ghana’s footwear industry

The Ghana Footwear Manufacturers Association has called on the government to put in place clear policies to safeguard the future of the national footwear manufacturing sector.

“We have been neglected for far too long as one of the nation’s most lucrative industries which employs more than 300,000 people along the value chain,” said Addo Kuffour, executive member of the organisation.

He went on to explain that the domestic footwear industry, which once served West African countries like Nigeria, Togo and Cameroon, has experienced a considerable decline.

The Ghana Footwear Manufacturers Association is asking the government to implement policies and regulations to support its recovery. Among its proposals is the setting up of a footwear manufacturing zone with state-of-the-art facilities.

“If possible, the government should also issue a fiat to ban temporarily the importation of foreign footwear products for the benefit of the local industry,” Mr Kuffour added.
