A plan is under way to help finished leather products manufacturers in the Aegean region of Turkey increase their export revenues.

The Aegean Leather Products Exporters Union has launched a new international development project, which it says will aim to bring in $50 billion extra in export earnings in the course of the next five years.

In recent comments to local media, the organisation’s president, Erkan Zandar, said the starting point would be visits to the Aegean region by industry experts from Germany and Italy to help local manufacturers develop more up-to-date production techniques and choose new machinery.

Mr Zandar said the project’s focus will be on footwear at first, but will look at garments and leathergoods too in a second phase.
