Indian government minister opens new footwear design centre

India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Suresh Prabhu, inaugurated a new footwear design and development institute (FDDI) in Hyderabad on July 5.

The establishment of three new FDDIs has among the measures included in an investment package for the leather industry announced by the Indian government ahead of the 2018 Indian International Leather Fair (IILF) in Chennai at the start of February.

Speaking at the inauguration in Hyderabad, Mr Prabhu reiterated that this support package of more than $400 million would serve to upgrade infrastructure and create jobs in the leather industry.

He added that design is the most important element when it comes to creating products and that this new centre dedicated to footwear would provide the necessary skills upgrade.
