The chief executive of sports apparel retailer China Dongxiang, Zhang Zhiyong, has predicted that the increase in popularity in China of running will lead to a domestic sportswear company being valued at more $1 billion in the future.

“Running as a segment in the whole sportswear industry is far from being fully developed in China,” Mr Zhang has said. “China now has hundreds of marathons being held every year, so the base of customers is enormous.”

He added that if a Chines company manages to “dig deeply into the running category and do things properly”, a domestic sportswear ‘unicorn’ (the term used to refer to a company worth more than $1 billion) will emerge.

China Dongxiang owns the rights to the Kappa sportswear brand in China.
