Time for Ecuador to have fashion footwear, Cantu says

For the first time, according to industry bodies, tanners and footwear producers in Ecuador are being encouraged to incorporate design and fashion trends into shoe collections for the domestic market.

To help them, the main footwear manufacturers’ association in the province of Tungurahua, Caltu, has engaged the services of Mexican design consultant Erick Pérez. Mr Pérez will give advice to local producers for their collections for spring-summer 2019 at a series of workshops between March 19-25.

Cantu president, Lilia Villavicencio, has insisted that this will be the first time local shoe manufacturers have taken part in an exercise of this kind, which she said is being driven by the conviction that consumers in Ecuador have as much right as anyone else to have fashion-inspired footwear.

She said: “The idea is to deliver a quality product that will meet the expectations of consumers who are becoming more and more demanding.”

National tanning industry body, ANCE, is supporting the workshops, as are several leather chemicals manufacturers. ANCE president, Mauricio Zurita, said in the build-up to the event that he believes leather chemicals companies are at the forefront of establishing fashion trends for leather and footwear.
