While most exhibitors at the exhibition are from Italy, she pointed out that companies from 18 countries had brought their latest technological innovations to show to tanners and footwear manufacturers at the event. And she said visitors from more than 80 countries had registered to attend.
Launching a new green label was, she explained, linked to Assomac’s commitment to Industry 4.0, arguing that sustainability and transparency as well as increased efficiency and connectivity in manufacturing technology.
Ms Marchioni Bocca said the green label, for which 25 member companies have already signed up, will also boost the value of Italian tanning and footwear machinery because the label will make it easy for tanners and finished product manufacturers to calculate the carbon footprint of the items they sell.
It’s an entirely voluntary project, she said. Assomac has worked with Genoa-based consultancy Rina to make all the background material for the green label available for use, but members must decide for themselves if they want to take part.
“It’s just a starting point,” she explained, “but it will allow companies to show improvement in areas such as carbon footprint. Our technology is becoming more sustainable day by day and we want to challenge the idea that leather is dirty. That’s not true and we are working to prove that. We believe in our work and we believe in leather.”
