Kenya takes footwear seriously in five-year plan

The Kenyan government has laid out plans for its footwear and leather industry as part of a wide-ranging five-year plan to improve the country’s manufacturing industries, healthcare and housing.

By 2022, Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta wants the country to produce 20 million shoes and increase export revenue from the sector to Sh50 billion ($490,000).

The country buys 30 million shoes per year, and the government says more leather shoes should be made domestically as they have access to the third largest herd in Africa.

In the next five years, “the government will ensure that all hides and skins are fully processed locally, personnel trained, 5,000 cottage industries set up, the Machakos Leather Park completed and three more leather parks identified”, said a statement.
