Footwear industry figures in the Balearic Islands, particularly on the island of Menorca, a traditional stronghold of the industry, are hopeful of securing part of a newly announced budget to boost the manufacturing sector in the region.

President of the regional government, Francina Armengol, announced a plan to boost the islands’ manufacturing sector between now and 2025 on January 22. She said the plan would have a budget of €105 million and would create 3,000 new jobs, 12% more than at present. The government is ready to spend the first tranche of money, around €12.5 million.

Antoni Juaneda, president of a small and medium-sized enterprises association in Menorca, said immediately that he was confident the island’s shoe industry would be one of those to benefit.

Ms Armengol laid out plans to help manufacturers across a number of sectors invest in new technology, in export promotion and in skills training for a new generation of workers.

She said the regional government was considering plans to set up around a dozen manufacturing clusters throughout the Balearic Islands, accommodating a total of around 600 manufacturing companies.
