São Paulo hosts 45th Couromoda

The forty-fifth edition of the Couromoda footwear and leathergoods exhibition took place in São Paulo from January 15-18, with buyers from Brazil and from 60 other countries travelling to the event to see the winter 2018 collections of 2,000 exhibiting brands.

Clave de Fá, from Franca, was one of the brands that caught the eye. Director of parent group Sándalo, Téti Brigagão, said that nature and the environment are the brand’s biggest inspirations for a collection that is dominated by black and brown boots, cut low and high.

One model had an interesting motif laser-cut into the leather at the side and rising up the length of the shaft. It was a series of flower shapes with a small metal stud in the centre each time. Another had symbols reminiscent of the ‘fast forward’ and ‘play’ commands for music printed onto the leather. Mr Brigagão said they denoted dynamism but were also a tribute to the symbols that indigenous peoples sometime put onto their clothing or skin.

From much further south, Anzetutto has included a capsule collection of snakeskin shoes and boots in its wider winter 2018 range, with nude and dark blue tones dominating and accentuating the scales on the skins. Designer, Alexandro Kristen, said he had wanted to emphasis authenticity and naturalness.

Organisers of the Couromoda show have calculated that brands taking part can, typically, generate 35% of their annual orders at Couromoda.
