Furthermore, the Germany-based footwear group has accused Amazon of failing to prevent “of its own accord” sellers using its online platform to pass off as genuine “counterfeit products of poor quality that infringed Birkenstock’s trademark rights and misled consumers regarding the origin of goods”.
Birkenstock noticed some time ago that fake footwear purporting to be from the brand was appearing for sale on Amazon sites. At the start of 2017, it sought to address the problem in the US by terminating an arrangement to supply stock to Amazon distribution centres there for direct delivery to consumers. It has now decided to extend this action to Amazon’s European distribution centre in Luxembourg.
It said there had been a breakdown in trust in its relationship with the online retailer.
