Quality improvement and brand-building are what Indonesia needs

The head of Indonesia’s agency for industrial research and development, Ngakan Timur Antara, has called on footwear manufacturers to improve the quality, design and branding of their shoes to help the country claim a bigger share of the global market.

In a speech at the start of an industry event in Jakarta on November 7, Mr Antara said that, while Indonesia is the fifth-biggest footwear exporter in the world, behind only China, India, Vietnam and Brazil, its share of the global market is only 4.4%.

For the industry in Indonesia to grow and for it to cement its position as a major footwear exporter in the decades ahead, he said improvement is needed. He suggested that footwear manufacturers should seek first to build up their own shoe brands domestically before taking them onto international markets.

He said the country’s leather and footwear sectors brought in export earnings of just over $5 billion in 2016, an increase of 3.3% compared to the previous year.
