Row brings Nicaragua school shoe programme to a stop

With the backing of the Central American country’s ministry for education, the programme has run for the last four years and was renewed in July 2017. Members of an industry organisation called the Cámara Cuero Calzado Nicaragüense (Camcunic) said they expected an important share of orders for 660,000 pairs of shoes for schoolchildren across the country, with delivery required for January 2018.
However, shortly after the ministry’s announcement, a separate industry organisation, the Cámara Nicaragüense de Cuero Calzado (CNCC), issued a complaint and asked for a review. Either the review is incomplete or the ministry is cancelling the programme for 2017 because manufacturers have still not received confirmation of the orders they were expecting.
CNCC’s objection centres on a change in the 2017 programme compared to previous years. Previously, the government had said it wanted all the shoes to be made from leather. This year’s announcement allowed for up to 60% of the total to be made from synthetic material.
