Summer slow-down in Turkish tanneries continues in September

03/10/2017
Industry observers in Turkey have said they expect a downturn in the value of the country’s leather exports this year.

Last year, exports of leather, footwear and leathergoods from Turkey earned the country $1.6 billion, but predictions are that, when complete, the 2017 figures will show a reduction of between 10% and 20%.

One factor has been a continuation of unusually high temperatures throughout the summer and into the autumn. September temperatures have consistently exceeded 30 degrees Celsius this year, keeping activity in tanneries and at finished product factories at low levels. Many manufacturing facilities have remained closed for extended unpaid summer breaks.
