‘Signs of life’ for leather footwear in the US
The US imported more than 1.2 billion pairs of shoes in the first six months of 2017, with a value of $12.1 billion.

These figures, quoted by industry analyst Peter Mangione at the 2017 Global Footwear Sustainability Summit in Shanghai on September 1, represent a growth in volume of 0.5%, but a decrease in value of 1.6%.

Specific to leather shoes, there were imports of 226 millions pairs in the first half of this year, which had a value of almost $4.8 billion. This means the US imported 7.5% fewer pairs of leather footwear in the first six months of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016 and spent 7.7% less money on those shoes.

Nevertheless, Mr Mangione said he can still see “some signs of life in leather footwear”. He explained that his main reason for optimism is a revival in women’s fashion footwear, while the “amazing run” of growth in athletic footwear may be coming to an end.
