‘Belt and Road’ will offer opportunities to Chinese leather firms

The chairman of the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA), Li Yuzhong, has said the country’s international economic development strategy, the Belt and Road Initiative, will provide opportunities for Chinese leather-sector companies.

Speaking at the opening press conference for the 2017 edition of the All China Leather Exhibition in Shanghai, Mr Li said he hopes the leather industry in China can implement “a new dynamic” in keeping with the changes in the country’s economy as it moves from being export-led to being driven, principally, by domestic consumption.

He said the Belt and Road Initiative, which will involve major improvements in the land and sea infrastructure across corridors connecting China, Europe and Africa, should bring opportunities for leather-sector companies to set up “production collaboration” initiatives in neighbouring countries.

“A lot of Chinese companies are looking to invest in overseas business now,” he said.
