Study warns of dangers of lightweight shoes for heavy runners

Research carried out at the University of South Australia’s Sansom Institute for Health Research has revealed that lightweight running shoes may cause more harm than good for runners carrying extra weight.

The 26-week study involved assessing the “running experience” of 61 trained runners. It found that those runners with a body weight of more than 85 kilogrammes (kg) were more than three times more likely to sustain an injury when wearing lightweight running shoes, compared to if they wore conventional running shoes.

The researchers said that lighter runners, those that weighed less than 71kg, improved their performance more when training in lightweight shoes, but showed no increased injury risk.
Runners weighing more than 71kg also improved their performance in lighter shoes, but had more injuries when wearing them. The risk of injury increased the heavier the runners got.
