Saltillo tannery uses waste leather to make shoes for local children

As part of a wider programme called ‘Buenos Pasos’ (‘Good Steps’), the automotive leather manufacturer’s teams in Saltillo, León and Nuevo Laredo have been donating unwanted leather form their cutting operations for an outsource manufacturer in León to make shoes for GST to give away.
In mid-June, the Saltillo team donated school shoes made from this leather to students at a special education centre for people with disabilities. Earlier this year, as part of the same project, the tannery donated 140 pairs of shoes to children who are in the care of the state of Coahuila.
Human resources director at the Saltillo tannery, Tadeo Carrizales, travelled to the education centre and joined the state government’s head of family affairs, Sergio Sisbeles, in handing the shoes over to students. On the day, Mr Sisbeles commented: “It’s important for our citizens to know about the work that goes on here to integrate young people with disabilities into society. This is a contribution towards that effort on the part of a responsible local business.”
For his part, Mr Carrizales said GST AutoLeather was committed to continuing to work with the authorities to support vulnerable sections of the local community.
