UK departure could pave the way for EU labels of origin, Assocal says

Italian footwear manufacturers’ association Assocalzaturifici sent a delegation to Brussels at the end of May for an event called ‘Italian Shoes, European Footprint’. Prominent shoe brands taking part included Casadei, Aldo Bruè, Baldinini, Bruno Magli, Gianna Meliani, Le Babe and Loriblu.

Assocal president, Annarita Pilotti, used the occasion to call on the European Commission to establish once and for all compulsory labels of origin on shoes sold in the European Union.

She commented: “We have been talking about this for ten years now. It seems that a majority of members of the European Parliament are in favour of this measure but that it keeps being rejected by the Council of Europe (the body consisting of the heads of government of the member states that has to approve most new measures). I have to wonder who it is who is afraid of ‘Made In’.”

Ms Pilotti then went on to suggest that the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union could help pave the way towards EU-wide labels of origin on shoes. She said the UK has “historically been an opponent” of such a move.
