Multi-million euro grant for new type of polyester

The European Union has awarded a grant of €25 million to a project to develop the value chain for polyethylenfuranoate (PEF) as an alternative base material for plastics to polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Dutch company Synvina, a joint venture between chemical companies Avantium and BASF, is one of the principal partners for the project. Synvina produces furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from renewable resources on pilot plant scale and markets the PEF polymer.

The contention of the project partners is that products made of PEF, which is based on renewable feedstock, will “significantly help to replace fossil-based materials” and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They describe PEF as an innovative polyester suitable for applications including polyurethanes.
