Rio Grande do Sul renews tax incentive for shoe companies

31/05/2017
The state authorities in Brazil’s main footwear-producing region, Rio Grande do Sul, have extended for a year a tax incentive available to shoe manufacturing companies.

Shoe producers are able to claim back from their home state 8.5% of taxes due to other states in Brazil that bring in shoes made in Rio Grande do Sul. At a meeting with industry representatives on May 29, governor, José Ivo Satori, renewed the policy until the end of May 2018.

Mr Sartori said at the meeting that the state government is conscious of the importance of the footwear industry to Rio Grande do Sul’s economy, especially in terms of the number of jobs it sustains.

There are around 3,000 footwear manufacturing companies in Rio Grande do Sul, employing a combined total of around 100,000 people. This figure corresponds to around 33% of the industry’s total workforce in Brazil.
