South African minister says investment in leather and footwear has paid off

South Africa’s trade and industry minister, Dr Rob Davies, has announced details of a new Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP) for the country.

On making the announcement, Dr Davies said previous plans had been successful. He said there was “clear evidence” of this success where programmes have been “adequately resourced”, and he mentioned leather and footwear as examples of this.

He said a partnership between the department of trade and industry and South Africa’s Industrial Development Corporation led to a Clothing and Textiles Competitiveness Programme (CTCP) had received more than $300 million in incentives since its launch in 2010. According to Dr Davies, the programme has saved 70,000 jobs and created 9,550 new ones.
