Agra footwear chief backs illegal slaughterhouse closures

The president of the Agra Footwear Manufacturers and Exporters Chamber (AFMEC), Puran Dawar, has said the closing of illegal slaughterhouses in the state of Uttar Pradesh will have a positive impact on India’s leather industry.

Mr Dawar, who is also a regional chairman for the Council for Leather Exports (CLE), said that international brands from the UK, US and Germany have in the past refused to buy products from Agra due to negative publicity over the poor treatment of animals in slaughterhouses.

“With such illegal abattoirs out of Uttar Pradesh, we will be able to market our products in these countries in a better manner," he added.

He described the impact of the sudden closure of slaughterhouses on the supply of leather as a “temporary phase”, but said the decision will improve the image of India’s leather industry in the long-term.
