New footwear deal in Portugal guarantees fair pay for women

Portugal’s footwear industry signed up to a new pay agreement with trade unions on April 18 and the new agreement made history because it establishes formally (for the first time) that women in the shoe sector must receive the same salary as their male counterparts do for carrying out the same work at the same level.

The agreement includes a salary increase of 3.8% for all footwear industry workers. Shoe industry association Apiccaps signed the new deal with trade union representatives at a meeting in Porto, with Portugal’s prime minister, António Costa, in attendance.

Later, Mr Costa said: “Footwear is an exemplary industry, one that has been able to modernise, to boost its exports and secure better salaries for its employees.”
