Tense times at Apiccaps

11/04/2017
Elections to choose the new president of Portuguese footwear industry body Apiccaps are generating more tension than usual.

In 42 years of existence, Apiccaps has only ever had five presidents, each of them appointed unopposed. The president of the Kyaia footwear group, Fortunato Frederico, has led the organisation for almost 20 years.

This time, however, Mr Frederico is not standing for re-election and a new appointment will be made on April 21. Unusually, there are two candidates.

Current vice-president Sérgio Cunha, president of the Pedreira Group, stood down when Apiccaps informed him it wanted another candidate, Luís Onofre, to take over. Mr Cunha announced he would run for the presidency of the organisation on his own, setting up an unprecedented head-to-head contest between the two.
