Northampton shoe collection safely in storage as museum expansion begins

05/04/2017
A project to give Northampton’s historic shoe collection to a new home is making progress.

The collection has been successfully moved from their old location at the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery and have gone into storage. Work to renovate and expand the museum will now begin.

A total of 3,125 items were painstakingly catalogued, packed and removed by staff and volunteers following the museum’s closure on Sunday, 19 February; the city authorities have said a total of 62 volunteers put in a total of 577 hours’ work during the move.

Once finished, the expanded museum is expected to reopen in autumn 2018 and will feature new shoe galleries.
