Since January 2017, the the Oeko-Tex Association has been inspecting and certifying leather products including clothing, shoes and upholstery materials under the new standard.
The standard complies with key statutory regulations and test for numerous chemicals that are harmful to health, even if they have not yet been legally regulated.
During certification, leather products are tested for formaldehyde, heavy metals such as chromium VI, arsenic, lead and cadmium, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, phthalates, processing agents and preservatives, PFOS, PFOA, as well as banned Azo colourants and other colourants.
Oeko-Tex has said that Lidl will use the leather standard for advertising purposes in its stores across Europe.
