Australian student wins Tuscan leather award
The most recent winner of the Craft the Leather award from Tuscany’s Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale (Consortium for Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather) is based in London, but Kira Goodey hails originally from Perth in Western Australia.

Ms Goodey, who is in the final months of a Master’s course in shoe design at the Royal College of Art in London, won the award for a footwear collection called Orlandi’s Opera, named after a depiction of the Crucifixion by Pisa-born painter Deodato Orlandi that she saw during the Craft the Leather programme.

She told leatherbiz that as soon as she heard about the programme, which the Consorzio runs each year as an outreach exercise, from her tutors she knew immediately that she wanted to take part. She explained: “I come from a craft background and am super-interested in traditional craft practices. Everyone knows Tuscan leather is the best in the world and to be immersed in that world, seeing everything from the arrival of the hides from the abattoir, to the tanneries, to the wastewater treatment plant, the landscape, the workshops and meeting all the people there, was absolutely exquisite. It was a dream come true.”
