Labour costs in China have tripled since 2005

Labour costs in China are now more expensive than in other prominent footwear-manufacturing countries, including Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. In fact, rates of pay are now higher in China than in every country in Latin America with the exception of Chile, according to new data from research group Euromonitor.

Its figures show steady growth in hourly pay for manufacturing workers in China between 2005 and 2016; the figure for 2016, $3.60 per hour, was three times the rate of pay in 2005.

However, over the same period, Euromonitor found that the average hourly pay for manufacturing workers in countries including Brazil and Mexico decreased and are now below China’s level. Wages fell from $2.90 an hour to $2.70 in Brazil, and from $2.20 to $2.10 in Mexico.

Labour costs have also fallen in Portugal, one of Europe’s most important shoe-producing countries, with factory workers there earning $4.50 an hour in 2016 compared to $6.30 in 2005.
