George Cox slams sham Strummer shoe scam

Imitation is a form of flattery, of course, but one of Northamptonshire’s small but strong group of independent men’s shoe manufacturers has had its patience pushed to the limit by an attempt by an online retailer based in southern England to trick the public into buying one of its most iconic styles.

Wellingborough-based George Cox is the celebrated supplier of shoes to a wide range of rock stars. It designed a style called Strummer for, and in honour of, Joe Strummer, the lead vocalist of punk rock band The Clash. The shoe still sells well.

Recently, a customer pointed out to George Cox that an online retailer called Ace Removals Folkestone purported to be offering Strummer shoes for the bargain price of £60 per pair. Cox’s manager, Steve Gollings, told leatherbiz that he and his colleagues decided that the best way to find out if the shoes really were Strummers was to buy a pair.

Mr Gollings said: “We ordered a pair only to be sent a pair of trainers, fake New Balance from China. Quite clearly they do not have our shoes or even fakes; it is just a scam.”

He explained that George Cox has passed all the information to trading standards authorities in the UK but said “next to nothing” had happened. A request for comment from Ace Removals Folkestone brought no response. On February 8 the retailer was still offering the shoes to customers on its website.
