Exports of footwear and leather from Sri Lanka increased 28% in 2016, according to the country’s Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen.

He was speaking at the opening of Sri Lanka’s annual Footwear and Leather Fair, which took place between February 3 and 5 in Colombo. This year’s edition, the 9th time it has taken place, saw the attendance of many domestic manufacturers, as well as 34 Indian companies. They were representing the Confederation of Indian Footwear Industry, Council for Leather Exports and Indian Footwear Components Manufacturers Association.

Mr Bathiudeen said the Sri Lankan government is planning to establish a footwear and leather industry city in the country’s Eastern Province. He added that footwear offers “great promise” for Sri Lanka as the global demand for luxury goods rises.

He explained that the government has already launched several projects designed to boost the Sri Lankan footwear industry, including investing in a footwear and leathergoods training school at the Institute of Textile & Apparel in the Ratmalana district of Colombo.
