India bans imports of exotic skins

India’s directorate general of foreign trade started the year by banning imports into the country of reptile skins.

Subjet to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and to its own 1972 wildlife protection act, the Indian government had allowed tariff-free imports of reptile skins. On January 3, it issued a notice saying imports of the material are now prohibited.
